This Yearbook focuses on the social security systems of tomorrow. The twentieth century has witnessed the birth of the welfare state, but changes in the societal structure have led some to question how well it will survive into the millennium. These changes include the demographic trend toward increased life expectancy and decreased fertility, the battle between individualism of the free market and the traditional solidarity structures of the welfare state, and the pressures that will be placed upon the children of tomorrow to integrate into a changing labour market. The papers in Social Protection of the Next Generation in Europe address these problems on an individual, national, and supra-national level. The contributors advance solutions to the potential problems posed that aim to improve efficiency, stimulate economic growth, distribute income fairly, reduce poverty, and prevent social exclusion. A special section about the evolution of social protection in Estonia introduces the reader to some of the additional social and political problems faced by eastern European states as they attempt to tackle the same pressing obstacles that face the West. This Yearbook will inform and appeal to social and economic research institutions, employee organizations and trade unions, social policy organizations, and government officials. It offers readers insight into issues and problems that may affect social security in the future as well as innovative assessments of such goals as economic growth, improved efficiency, increased employment, fairer income distribution, and the reduction of poverty and social exclusion.
